Pilot Introduces Students to Farm
Students participate in a classroom activity focused on edible and nonedible items.
High school science teacher Ryan McGrath is visiting a small group of classes at Burr and Sawmill this week to introduce an Agricultural Education pilot program.
McGrath joined students from Alison Butler’s third-grade class on Wednesday afternoon at Burr and discussed topics including edible and nonedible items, unprocessed and processed foods, and seeds and saplings.
The pilot program will give students the opportunity to visit Commack's Marion Carll Farm to learn about how food is grown.
Students will get hands-on experience in the field sowing seeds, planting seedlings, monitoring plant growth and even harvesting some of the food they grow.
